The experience
What is a Mentawai immersion experience?
Several days living with a Mentawai family. Most guests leave with a deep sense of connection and gratitude, a new respect for the Mentawai and an awareness of why preserving indigenous cultures matters.
What can I expect during the immersion?
- Living in a traditional wooden house (Uma)
- Learning jungle skills such as making poison arrows and processing sago
- Joining daily tasks like cooking, fishing or gathering
- Observing or joining spiritual or shamanic rituals, if we are lucky
- Bathing in the river and sleeping on mats or simple beds
How long should I stay?
Tours run from 3 to 8 days. A longer stay gives you a deeper understanding and connection.
Is it suitable for children or the elderly?
It depends on physical condition and mindset. There is jungle trekking, basic facilities and rustic conditions, so it suits adventurous, physically able travellers.
Getting there
Where are the Mentawai Islands?
Off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Siberut, the main island for cultural immersion, is reached by ferry from Padang.
How do I get to the Mentawai Islands?
- Fly to Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) in Padang
- Take the fast ferry (about 4–6 hours) from Padang to Siberut
- Continue by road, canoe and on foot to the village and Uma
Do I need a guide?
Yes. A local guide is essential for communication, cultural respect, navigation and safety.
Do I need permits?
Yes. We arrange them for you; a copy of your passport may be needed.
Life in the Uma
What about food and water?
Simple food based on sago, fish, Siberut vegetables, noodles, eggs and rice. Drinking water is boiled. Tell us about dietary needs when you book.
Is there phone signal or internet?
No. Most areas are out of range, which is a great chance to unplug.
What should I pack?
- Lightweight, quick-dry clothing
- Rain gear and waterproof bags
- Insect repellent
- Biodegradable personal hygiene products
- Basic first aid kit and medication
- Head torch
- Power bank (no electricity in the jungle)
- A respectful attitude and an open mind
Is it safe?
Yes. The Mentawai are hospitable and respectful. It is a remote area, so you should be in good health, follow safety guidance and travel with an experienced guide.
Respect and ethics
Can I take photos or videos?
Yes, but always ask first, especially during rituals or personal moments. Some people are happy with cameras, others prefer privacy.
Why is respect so important?
Mentawai culture is deeply spiritual and community-based. Respecting customs, dressing modestly and following your guide's advice helps preserve their way of life.
